This
season's final took place on a very tricky looking Whitburn green, out
of the six players only Hetton's Peter Harding has won the Burkett
before but that was some ten years ago. The teams lined up as follows
for this years final -
T.Teasdale,
Rod Maxwell, Peter Harding, Hetton Workmen’s
v
Mel
Owen, Phil Smithson & Brian Cain, Houghton Dairy Lane’s
A
respectably sized crowd were entertained off the green as the final was
played out against the back drop of music as a twenty-twenty cricket
fixture at the neighbouring cricket club was being played which led us
to think if the Sunderland & District could experiment with it
..... walking back to the mat with the last bowl six down in the
head and a sudden blast of Queen's Under Pressure fills the
airwaves!!!!! anyway back to reality and the extra musical sideshow
didn’t detract from the action on the green. The early exchanges saw
Harding lead 6-2 and then 9-7, on a surface where counts were at a
premium the next end proved crucial as the Hetton lad's collected a five
to lead 14-7, by the 14th end it was 15-8 before the Houghton
lad's suffered a fatal blow and a count of six to Harding was the signal
shake hands. Current District President Whitburn's Norman Shield's
presented the shield to the Hetton trio...... cue for another Queen
ditty another one bites the dust!!!! if only.
