This years Burkett Shield final was held at current district president Jim Huntingdon's Roker Park green, the final was played on a fine evening and following all the recent rain the green looked very lush but the pace was good. The final was an all Roker affair as Roker Park's Fred Lulham, Ernie Peacock and George Kerry faced Roker Marine's Lindsey Smith, Pat Thomson and Peter Thomson, the early exchanges went to the Roker Park trio as Kerry opened up a 4-1 lead, the Marine triple hit back and scored 13-1 to lead 13-5, with the score at 13-8 the next end proved a pivotal moment, with Kerry holding a count of four Thomson with his last bowl converted it into a scoring single to go 14-8 ahead. With ends running out the Marine triple kept things tight and went into the final end 17-12 ahead, a count of five for Kerry was possible but it was not to be and the final score was 17-13 to Thomson. This win means the Marine club have lifted the Burkett Shields six times out of the last seven years.
