BRIEF HISTORY

The Grindon League was formed in 1933 with its main aim being to promote bowls among small private clubs and to encourage workers to take up a recreation which would be beneficial to their health. Founder members were Sunderland Echo, Vaux SC, Wearmouth CW, West End Mechanics and Grindon Mill. Nowadays the league has increased to fourteen clubs although the idea of works teams has all but gone.
The first winner of the league was Wearmouth who proceeded to retain the title for the next four years.

The league has always dominated Friday evenings and is well supported although recently the four individual competitions have been abandoned.
