BOWLS REPORT - April 30th 2011
The indoor season at Crowtree came to a close with the quartet of Joe Flett, John Jones, Dennis Hulley and Tommy Jopling completing a unique double as they lifted the men’s fours and the senior fours titles. In a dramatic men’s fours final they faced Michael Wright, Tony Wood, Peter Brickle and Ray Robinson, the early exchanges saw the Robinson quartet open up a 10-1 lead after eight of the fifteen ends and looked set for a surprise win until Jopling got a favourable result on the ninth end to collect a seven to make the score 10-8. By the thirteenth end Jopling had turned the final on its head and led 12-11 before another big count on the fourteenth end put Jopling 18-11 up to leave Robinson needing an unlikely seven on the final end, it finished 18-12 to Jopling which completed the double. Twenty four hours earlier the same quartet faced John Smith, Peter Brickle, Fred Knubley and Billy Ferry in the senior fours final, it was expected to be a tight affair and at 5-5 after six ends it looked to be the case however fourteen shots over the next four ends saw Jopling race into an unassailable 19-5 lead, a Ferry four on the eleventh end made it 19-9 but the writing was on the wall as Jopling collected another five on the thirteenth end to seal a 25-9 win.
